Virginia Highlands Festival

ABINGDON, VA — Just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, in a valley formed by the Holston River is Abingdon, a town rich in history and tradition. Abingdon is proud of its history and rich heritage. Strolling down shaded brick sidewalks in the 20-square-block historic district, it's as if one has stepped back in time. Easily imagined are the nights spent here by Daniel Boone, ghostly sounds echoing in The Martha Washington Inn, and the applause of farmers at the Barter Theatre. The Virginia Highlands Festival began in 1948 and, over the years, has grown and flourished. Today it is one of the top 100 tourist events in North America and one of the top 20 in the Southeast — offering plenty of entertainment, an enormous antiques market, juried art and photography competitions, and a juried arts and crafts show, as well as nationally-known writers, lecturers, and visual and performing artists.

This year the Virginia Highlands Festival will take place on August 2-11, 2013. Each year, the Virginia Highlands Festival commissions an artist to create an original, signature piece to represent the Festival and its theme.

Visitors to the festival will enjoy the Arts & Crafts area with free admission, Kitchen Tours, Home & Garden, Literary events including workshops, seminars and readings, Fine Art and Photography, Living History events, storytelling, late night improv, plays at the Barter Theatre, Magicians, Jugglers, Balloons, Parades and so much more.

Discover those special, hard-to-find items at this 45,000-square-foot market. For many people, it's the centerpiece of the Festival. Antique lovers spend days browsing through tents filled with an impressive array of fine formal and country furniture, top-end collectibles, folk art, jewelry, accessories, books and primitives. East Coast dealers offer fine period furniture, porcelain, sterling silver, quilts, clothing, paintings, rugs, and more. Dealers always restock, so be sure to visit more than once!
