Safeway's Annual National Capital Barbecue Battle
WASHINGTON, DC — Held on the first weekend of summer each year, Safeway's Barbecue Battle showcases the Barbecue industry on an almost mile-long stretch of Historic Pennsylvania Avenue in our Nation's Capital. Held on June 22-23, 2013, signaling the beginning of summer, the Barbecue Battle continues to be Washington’s largest and most unique food and music festival!
In a scenic downtown Washington setting, top teams will gather from north to south and east to west, to cook-off for over $40,000 in cash and prizes in three major competition barbecue contests on a single weekend. On Saturday, a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned contest will feature chicken, beef and pork categories. At the center of the Safeway Barbecue Battle, the ever popular Safeway Sampling Pavillion showcases a line-up of delicious and tempting free samples while celebrity chefs and cookbook authors entertain with cooking demonstrations on the Safeway Demonstration Stage. Musical entertainment includes something for everyone and more family entertainment on multiple stages as well as interactive exhibits providing hands-on and virtual fun for all.
In addition to all the great food and fun, Safeway's Barbecue Battle has raised over 1.2 million dollars for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Washington in past years and provided free exhibit space and funding opportunities to dozens of other non-profit organizations.
The Safeway Barbecue Battle has garnered many awards including being voted a “Top 10 BBQ Event” by The Travel Channel and Discovery.com, one of the “5 Can’t Miss Summer Festivals in the US” by CNN Travel and one of “America’s Best BBQ Competitions” by Saveur magazine in 2011.
