Virginia Scottish Games & Festival

Foot Races, Caber Toss and Scottish Merchandise

THE PLAINS — It is with great pleasure that we invite you to celebrate the Virginia Scottish Games on September 2-3, 2017! The Virginia Scottish Games is an annual event celebrating our state's rich Scottish heritage. Everything you've come to love about the Virginia Scottish Games (VSGA) is located in a setting reminiscent of the rolling hills of Scotland.

The cornerstone of the Games is Highland Athletics in which athletes come from across the country to compete in displays of strength and balance. Additionally, there are Piping & Drumming and Highland Dance competitions, Scottish Country Dance, lovable Scottish dogs, Scottish fiddling and the very popular sheepherding demonstrations. For the auto enthusiast, there will be more than 50 rare and antique British cars. Dancers will perform many Scottish dances including the Highland Fling, the Sailor's Hornpipe, Scottish Lilt, the Sword Dance  and many more.

The Children's games are loosely modeled after the adult professional and amateur athletics' events and are open to children up to 15 years of age. The events include foot races, bale tossing, brick throwing, the discus (Frisbee) throw, and the "caber" toss. Everyone will anticipate the adult athletics event which includes the Braemar Stone Toss, Open Stone Toss, Heavy Weight Toss, Heavy Hammer Throw, Caber Toss, Sheaf Toss and the Weight Over Bar. Bring the whole famliy and even the family canine for a day of Scottish culture.

The event is seeking volunteers for 2017—kilts welcome but not required. For more information call (703) 912-1943 or visit www.vascottishgames.org.
